Ever wonder how China controls the UN and maybe Bush, too?
There is a small tempest in an Asia teapot brewing right now.
Seems a 15 year old Taiwan boy entered a Lions Club stamp art contest sponsored by the UNESCO and UN Postal Service. Initally the boy, Mr Yang, won one of the winner slots and he was notified his artwork would be used by the UN this year. Enter commie China, bully of the world, and China complains to Coffee Annan that there is a small TAWIAN national flag in the kid's artwork, along with flags of 25 other nations, the theme of the artwork is peace naturally, and so China makes the UN pull thje kid's winning entry and he is no longer a winner. The USA says nothing of course.
But this is what the UNPA wrote to me:
Dear Intrepid,
RE: your letter about how commie CHina bullied the UN re the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA)
Statement on the Peace One Day stamp issue on 21 September 2004.
http://www.un.org/Depts/UNPA/additional/dream_for_peace/index2.html
The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) fully understands and
appreciates the concerns of people in Taiwan and peace loving people in the USA such as yourself, over the incorrect peace stamp image
being publicized by the Taiwn media.
While expressing our regret, we do wish to explain the process of the selection of
the stamp designs and the actual reasons which led to this cross-strait incident between communist China and free democratic Taiwan. We also hope to clear up any
misunderstandings about how the UNPA selects stamp designs through the Stamp Advisory
Committee (SAC), that is made up of 10 members from its New York, Geneva
and Vienna offices.
In this case, SAC short listed 8 designs from the
24 merit award winners of the Lions Clubs International design a Peace
Poster Competition, and one of these was by Chih-Yuan Yang of Taiwan, which is a free and independent country not ruled by communist China. In order to
see all the 8 design images at their actual tiny stamp size in order to gauge the reproduction quality,
UNPA had printed proofs made, and SAC thereafter finally selected 6 designs
to be featured on UNPA's 2004 Peace Stamps. China never asked us to do this, we did this ourselves, and we have no connection with communist China other than that we take orders from those bully dictators.
Unfortunately Chih-Yaun
Yang's artwork design did not make the final 6, but please understand that this was due entirely to an internal
misunderstanding and miscommunication, and not from any pressure from bully China. (We are lying here. Actually, China did pressure us. But we can't say that to the media in the world.)
Mr. Yang's proof got publicized in
error on our original website as one of the 6 stamps intended to be issued.
This error was detected, and hence a correction on our website has been made.
UNPA appreciates your understanding of how we lie to the media in the face of communist China's entreaties.
Sincerely,
Coffee Annanymous
UN
